I hate Indiana

I was thrilled to get out of Illinois and into Indiana but that didn't last very long. My last trip through Indiana resulted in a visit from the State Police so I was hoping to avoid that today by setting the cruise at ~6 over until I got to Ohio. Shortly after stopping for dinner I started getting radar hits, no worries I though, I'm in the right lane minding my own business and both the speedometer and GPS are reading 76mph. In fact there was a minivan ahead that was doing at least 85 and I had a cluster of cars behind me that were gaining on me and about to pass. So, I continued on my way past officer friendly partially hidden in the median. As the two cars behind me passed him he started to roll and I figured he was after the gold buick that had been steadily gaining on me but nope, he tucked in behind me and the lights came on. He tells me he was pulling me over for speeding, 83 in a 70 he says. I was shocked since I had been holding a steady 76 since I pulled out of the rest stop (I checked the GPS log, ~76mph for 30 straight minutes). He would hear nothing of it though, both my speedometer and GPS were wrong (by the same amount), oh and the GPS is a dangerous distraction. He is a highly trained officer and not only did he get me on radar but he is trained to visually check speed and was sure that I was doing 83mph. My questions only got me a lecture, I was getting the buick's ticket and there wasn't much I could do about that, he owes me $136.
It is very unlikely that I will ever make this drive again. There's not really much to see on this side of the country, all the interesting stuff is on the west coast. Driving this far is really just for the drive and the bad drivers, bad roads, tolls, police and traffic take all the fun out of the drive. I've driven close to 4000 interstate miles in the past week and I didn't see a static speed trap until I got to Indiana, in Wyoming and Montana the State Patrol actually patrols! They're not parked making money for the state on a poorly maintained toll road. The drivers in Illinois have the worst lane discipline I've ever seen, even worse than SLC. I will be glad to at least get out of the northeast, I'm hoping things are better in the southeast but don't expect to really get back to motoring until I get back to New Mexico.
I did make it about a third of the way across Ohio today. Tomorrow I will either head towards Portland or make a pitstop in Kingston, it'll depend on what time I hit Albany and how tired I am. No more timezones to cross so at least I won't lose an hour of driving tomorrow.

Trip Stats:
664 miles
10hrs of driving
68mph average speed
29mpg
11k ft climbed
two gas stops
5 states traversed; Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio

I'm working on the website now. Indiana must be removed from the union. WORST STATE EVER.... with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

I am from Illinois and can vouch for the bad lane discipline. I go back and rinding with my dad is pure white knuckle. If he's not sure what lane he wants to be in, he picks... both! He'll just drive down the highway with the dashed line pointing into his grille. Amazing.

I cant stand Indiana. Have lived here for around 22 years of my life. Nothing good about this state at all. Least of all the government officials.

I agree 100%... Indiana should be banned as a state. There is nothing good at all here, in any shape or size. Moving here three years ago was the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life. I hope I leave before I kill myself from the boredom.

I'm from the northeast, but go to Indiana University. This place is pathetic. The people are stupid, blue collar, hyper-conservative, closed minded, idiots. They refuse to accept the fact that Indianapolis does not count as a real city and nothing good comes from this place. Not to mention, colts suck!

Interesting to know.

Indiana is a shithole. No one moves here (except for morons like me) and this idiots NEVER leave. It is like a deserted island with its own culture. Born and raised in the east we are given the impression that the Midwest if the heartland and the home of good American values. Indiana is home to the most pompous (especially Carmel) unaccomplished marginally educated windbags I have ever met. I prefer NYers who I find to be much more honest and straight forward. There is no mass transportation, recycling and the weather sucks....either muggy and hot or windy and freezing. 90% of the population is white trash, real hard core trailer trash complete with missing teeth and mulatto children.

Indiana has to be the worst place in the country to live outside of West Virginia (not that I've lived in WV, but I can imagine). I've lived here for 28 miserable years and I'm seriously contemplating getting the hell out of here. Nothing but ignorant, uneducated, arrogant, stuck-up inbred trailer trash everywhere. It's the kind of place that if you're male and have read a book, taken a shower in the last week, and can speak articulately, you're obviously gay.
Apparently, "real men" are missing teeth, drive 35 year old Ford F150s, guzzle PBR and sit on their fat asses watching the Colts' with their dumb blonde housewives and idiot, futureless moron children.

I mostly agree with the Indiana comment, outside of some ad-hominem attacks and blanket white-trash comments. I've seen white trash in major cities NOT in Indiana. What I don't like about Indiana is its "justice" system. They simply don't care and are going to prosecute to the fullest extent, whether you're squeaky clean or a hardened felon. Indiana has no expungement laws, so any crime sticks for life. A sad commentary for so many young ones who have nothing to do but play dodge ball with police. The old saying about Indiana - come on vaction, leave on probation, has a lot of truth to it.

In response to the above comment...Who the HELL comes to Indiana on vacation???

I truly wish I could find one redemming quality about Indiana.. I am not sure but I think that stupidity is bliss here.. I have not ran into anyone with an IQ over Britney Spears.. this place has got to be the most corrupt state of this union.. cops running drugs.. stealing is over the top.. and drugs are also.. I am not talking about pot.. I am talking about pills ...

tons of white trash and the blacks are from the way old school.. they hate everyone..

I Hate INdiana..... garbage garbage garbage .. and there is no way on God's green earth they are going to change.. everything is grandfathered in... corruption is out of control.. there are just as many cops in jail as there are out of jail...this place is the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you are considering moving here ... DON'T...

Yeah, our police do suck. But we are not trailor trash sir. Get out of the southern part and come up to Carmel Indiana, or downtown. Downtown is hella fun, and we have awesome colleges. We're not all conservatives, we have (too many) liberals and democrats here. We don't eat corn all the time, we are hygenic, and we have money. Ya'll need to get out of your houses and visit people here in Indiana. I love Indiana! But I suppose you all think New Jersey people act like the cast of Jersey Shore, and New Yorkers sell hot dogs and news papers all day. Indiana is great, you just need to find the right spot to visit.

I have lived in Evansville Indiana and this place is HELL...I moved here when my husband got a job here.
These people come form Mars they are rude and think they are all that but they are skanks!!!!!
They really are evil people..I have never in my life seen rude ass people like these! Oh I dread going shopping and stuff and just talking to these people!! I would rather stay home. But I pray we get to move from the skank hole these people can ROTTTTTTTT...Come stay and see..

Indiana is a goddamn bummer. I've lived in Evansville for 18 years and moved here from central California. The majority of people are extremely neo-Conservative, morbidly obese, chain smoke everywhere, uneducated, on disability, and addicted to meth. It's a cultural black hole. I've really never met anyone that lives here that enjoys it aside from those born and raised in the small surrounding towns who have never traveled further than twenty miles from their homes.

I grew up in Indiana for 20 years, and this place pisses me off all the time.

The social circle is nothing more than a shark tank. People love to gossip and backstab their friends. The only conversational topics in this Hoosier town involve trash talking and ego stroking. It's horrible communicating with the locals. They put each other down all the time, both face to face and out of ear shot.

The traffic is horrible. State Road 267 is always blocked by construction workers, who do nothing but stand around and do nothing. They don't even direct traffic anymore. They just block the road with their giant machines and disappear. This problem started when I moved away in 2007, and it still continues to be a problem in 2011. The back roads are guarded by police officers, who hide and wait for speeders.

Honestly, I prefer living in Florida. I moved into a duplex right next to the ocean, where the air smells like salt, the sun is bright, the wind is blowing, and there is nothing more to worry about than palm trees, sand, and water. Truly a beautiful town with kind hearted people. I want nothing more out of life.

I found this site by chance because I am so fed up living here. We relocated to this awful place for my husband's job 3 yrs ago. We originally were thrilled as the cost of living is cheap and afforded us to live in a upscale area (I say this loosely). I have never lived in a place where social classes are so segregated. Its the have's and the have not's. The "educated" people I meet are so closed minded. I feel like an outcast which is strange for me because I am a blender. I can fit in anywhere or so I thought. I try to make friends but I have nothing in common with anyone. This place is like an island all on its own. You can't even hint that you are unhappy because all the born and bred Hoosiers get upset. This place is wonderful in their minds. If you say you are bored they mention the 5 things this area is known for. Well after 3 yrs, I have done those 5 things 15 times over. They were boring to begin with sure as heck not that fantastic after 3 yrs. Personally, the only source of entertainment in my area is going to the local HS football games, going to the bar or going shopping.

Moving to Indiana was the worst mistake of my life, and now I fear that I will die here.

Everything people have said is true. The backstabbing, gossip, thefts, drugs, toothlessness, etc.

Come on vacation leave on probation: Indiana is so corrupt and ignorant to reality that the theives are the victims if you don't give cry baby Hoosiers what they want. Yup, the criminals go crying to the police I you fight back and YOU will go to jail!

Corn 4 brains and teeth? If there is something there is a lot of in indiana (besides Hoosiers) is corn! Hoosiers are obsessed with corn. They even have a game called corn hole, which is basically a board with a hole in it and a sack filled with corn. Besides the simplicity of the game that entertains such corn brained people is that used corn hole games sell for up to hundreds of dollars! These ppl love their corn. About the teeth I just think that all the corn and all the stupidity and all the toothlessness fit in to it together somehow :-)

Hoosiers. Why do Indiana folk call themselves Hoosiers? I have asked a lot of Hoosiers and none can tell me, so I came up with a pretty darn good guess. A long time ago people not from Indiana would shout 'losers, whenever they met people from Indiana. Being from Indiana, the Indiana people live in such a deep state of denial(they teach young Hoosiers this in school) that they hear Hoosiers, and mistinterpreted all the fear and anxiety that their presence produced as joy and praise, so now they proudly call themselves Hoosiers. Don't be fooled by these ignorant sacks o craps calling themselves Hoosiers, it really means losers.

I moved here about 5 years ago. Every comment posted here is true. This place is absolute hell hole. I am trying like hell to get the f out of this state. This state loves their jesus and their law enforcement. The cops and judicial system here is pathetic, I call this cornfield justice.
These people (hoosiers) are very close minded, very ignorant, and love to gossip against each other, but they love each other to their face!
Considering moving here? take my advice DONT DO IT
If you are travelling through here... find another way around, lest you be sucked into this vacuous microcosm of cornfield hell!

Well, at least I'm not alone in hating this place. Add to the above neglect of domestic pets, and the picture of arrested development is complete. Worst of all, the place is so depressing that it robs you of the energy to escape it.

I also hate Indiana. Most states you can drive with confidence at 5 over. With two exceptions Indiana & Ohioboth these have revenue enhancement traps and are not shy about giving tickets.Currently I have a lawyer fighting a $129 ticket paying $350 for her service.I drive a truck and will never fuel in that state again, average fuel stop is $800.Just my way to get back.

I have to say I agree with everyone here. I was absolutely shocked by the close minded people that live here. I'm from California, also a veteran, and also multiracial, and I have traveled all over the world. Never had I thought so much about race and class divisions as I do know, because I am forced to, with all the contempt and snide remarks you get from these people. It is a sad world to live in (so far removed from reality and the modern world). If I wasn't in school I would had left a long time ago. I pray everyday that I can survive the rest of the years I have left here.

I was born and raised in Indiana. My dad shot two dogs/1973/ that were attacking our sheep. The dogs belonged to an FBI agent. Guess what. He was dragged from bed at 10:30 pm, taken away like a criminal, and had to pay a fine. The dogs were loose, killing sheep. And HE was fined? I've had to complain about a cop in southern Indiana...and my family and I are now ruined. I agree with every neg. comment on this blog. Here's another example of "Hoosier Hospitality"...We made the mistake of moving next to a corn maze. They guy had a huge stadium light that he pointed directly at our house, blinding us. We ask that they point it away from us? NOW, we have a complete circle of real bright 'security' lights from every single neighbor we have, all pointing at our house. SEE? That's how Indiana is. So 'kind'...considerate and just the 'salt of the earth'. I'm ashamed to have been born here.

Indiana sucks when it comes to getting your tax return.

My federal return went through immediately, and I'm getting nearly $600 in three weeks.

My Indiana return is still stuck in the system, and I won't get the $150 I'm owed for another twelve weeks.

Why the hell is this state lagging far behind? Indiana must be the stupidest state in the country.

The people here are HORRIBLE! They act like there shit doesn't stink and they have major attitude and hostility. Very closed minded and judgmental people. It can be amusing when you go to places like NYC, L.A., and Atlanta and the people treat you with respect but then you come to someplace like Bloomington, Indiana and the people act like they are better than you, yeah right! HOOSIER LOSERS!

"Worst of all, the place is so depressing that it robs you of the energy to escape it." My situation exactly.

I really enjoyed reading these comments. I am a Hoosier, born and raised, and I have wanted to escape since the age of 10. I have visited other states and managed to escape a time or two, but I have been forced back into this vortex of despair time and time again. In total I have lived in Indianapolis for 40 years. This place is overwrought with ignorant and small minded people. The Justice system is designed for your destruction. Racism is abundant and accepted as just the status quo. Mostly, "this place is so depressing that it robs you of the energy to escape it".

HEY DIPSHIT JOHN. YOU WERE SPEEDING AND NOW YOUR CRYING ABOUT A TICKET? ALSO THIS IS THE MIDWEST NOT THE NORTHEAST. WHAT A MORON!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous saying "HEY DIPSHIT JOHN"

The police do suck and shouldn't be giving tickets. Don't know if you are just trolling, or are really mad. It's bad when police hide on an abandoned road and secretly wait for speeders. I've only had two bad experiences with the police and I've gotten pulled over on abandoned roads twice years ago.

John said...

My contention (7 years ago) was that although I was traveling 6mph over which is generally within reason for speed enforcement, I was being passed by someone who was traveling quite a bit faster than me who was not pulled over. Also, the officer in question said I was going 83mph which I wasn't; as confirmed with my speedometer and GPS.

I moved to Indiana while I was younger from California and had nothing but problems with corruption and crooked cops making threats against me and my family. I agree with everything that everyone one this page has said negative about Indiana! I can not for the life of me understand why Indiana is even still part of the United States of America. I now live in IL which has it's share of problems but does not compare with the overall horrors of Indiana. For example, IL had its share of corruption and they went so far as to send their own governor to prison. By contrast, Indiana has a much worse governor and nothing is done to him. Instead, Indiana celebrates corruption. I won't even return to the state to see old friends and relatives, instead I make them come and see me here in IL. Due to my negative dealings with the Indiana locals, in my mind, I equate Indiana with the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany in terms of overall evil. What a nightmare state!

Yeah I live here to. I know this is an ancient article and I don't write very often but, I agree with most of these posts. I have lived around bloomington, greencastle, madison, indianapolis and now I am in the carmel area. Some isolated.cities here are not horrible. However the judicial system sucks badly. I can't even describe to you all the horrors I have had to go through with that. I try hard to be friendly and just to the people around me but except for the indianapolis black folks and some of the central indiana isolated town people the rest are stuck up, self righteous, arrogant pricks that have some serious mental problems. Most of my family still lives here and besides my parents and a few nephews of mine the rest suck. My brother is a jerk who uses people who are nice for a place to live because he is to big a loser to take care of himself, my other broth er is a know it all moron that can't see the truth if it was in his face. My wifes family is okay except for a sister in law and brotjer in law who is so arrogant and selfish that they damn near destroyed my relationship with my wife. So yeah out of ten or twelve people in our families three or four are.actually really kind, gentle and wonderful people. I hate this state with a passion. I have seen worse.though, nebraska sucked pretty bad and southern cali was awful. I liked colorado and a few western states. The eastern sea board wasn't bad but, I liked the beauty of the west. Now getting back to my unfortunate situation here in carmel with all the stupid roundabouts and cornfields that surround this place I don't know what to think. I think they really do think they are far more special then they really are and have found much more reasonable and good people in the zionsville area. They even out rank carmel but, for the love of g** don't tell them that. Hoping to get the hell away from here soon. I really fit in well.with the coloradians the best. Nice, good decent folks bu cost of living stinks. By the way I do bath every day lol. I would help anyone on the side of a road and yes I have decent teeth lol. However I do know how you feel. Twenty years ago it wasn't this bad. Its really gotten crappy of that time. My apologies for how indiana.hasm treated you. How you feel, your not alone.
